Excerpt review Shorthorn

Excerpt from review by Gjared Robinson in The Shorthorn, February 22, 2002 of UTA exhibition.

Frank Born, a San Francisco-based painter from Port Arthur, said the name and idea for the show came from concepts of work being displayed by the artists.

"There are three painters, three sculptors and three works by each. It's a combination of two-dimensional and three-dimensional works," he said.

Born said his paintings tell a story. One such work depicts a male figure with his arms out-stretched at a 45- degree angle from the ground.

"My work deals with human psychology and the figures deal with each other in a loose ambiguous narrative, which is open to interpretation," he said. "People interpret it as him about to fly, keep his balance, giving a benediction, or on a boat tipping over."

Born said he often paints without anything in mind and said his paintings are "objects of projection" and produce feeling.

"These paintings are representations of how the world looks through my eyes," he said. "I want my work to be a vehicle for emotion, for me and the viewers."
